March GMM & Narcan Training Recap

Last month's March General Membership Meeting, Junior League of Greater New Haven members gathered at the Arts Council (and virtually) for an important Narcan Training led by Kara Sepulchers-Fonseca from Alliance for Prevention & Wellness (BHcare) and Fiona and Isabelle Firine from For Cameron, Inc.

This impactful training included:

✔️ Eye-opening statistics and insights into the ongoing opioid crisis

✔️ The knowledge to recognize an opioid overdose

✔️ Hands-on experience in using Narcan

✔️ The confidence to take action and help save lives

Attendees were also provided Narcan and a face shield to help save lives.

In 2023, Connecticut lost 1,329 lives to opioid overdose. We are grateful to Alliance for Prevention & Wellness and For Cameron, Inc. for sharing their expertise and dedication to overdose prevention and awareness.

A special thank you to our League Development Chair, Monica Grey-Childs, for planning and organizing this opportunity, along with others who helped make this experience meaningful.

CCJL Bubbly & Brunch

Last month, the Junior League of Greater New Haven had the honor of hosting the first Connecticut Council of Junior Leagues (CCJL) event in years — and it was an unforgettable one!

As this year’s chair of the CCJL, we proudly welcomed Leaguers from across the state for Bubbly & Brunch at the historic Estate, once owned by Deb Townshend, a beloved New Haven leader and past League President. Guests enjoyed an upscale bruncheon, top-shelf brunch cocktails, and an inspiring keynote from our friends at the CT Diaper Bank.

The event brought together members past and present from West Hartford to New Canaan, and everywhere in between, creating new connections and celebrating the power of women-led community impact.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special gathering — we loved seeing so many familiar faces and meeting future leaders!

Spring Provisional Class Completes Impactful Community Project

The Junior League of Greater New Haven is excited to celebrate the success of our Spring Provisional Class and their inspiring community project!

On February 22, the spring provisional class hosted a book drive at Spruce Coffee, bringing together community members over coffee and conversation, all in support of a great cause. Through the generosity of attendees and supporters, the group collected gently used and new books to benefit New Haven Reads, a local organization committed to promoting literacy and a love of reading among children in the Greater New Haven area.

This event was more than a service project — it was a demonstration of our newest members' commitment to leadership, community engagement, and meaningful impact. From planning and promotion to event-day execution, the provisional class embodied the Junior League mission of developing the potential of women and improving our community through the power of volunteer action.

A special thank you to Spruce Coffee for hosting and to everyone who stopped by and donated. Your support helped make this initiative a success!

Congratulations again to our Spring Provisional Class — we can’t wait to see how you continue to lead and serve!

January Recruitment Social Recap

This month, the Junior League of Greater New Haven kicked off the new year with a memorable January Recruitment Social at the Yale University Art Gallery.

Our small group of attendees enjoyed an exclusive, private tour of the museum, exploring the galleries and focusing on the theme of "community" through the lens of art. Guided by the museum’s knowledgeable Education Department, we engaged in active discussions about the artwork, deepening our appreciation for its cultural and historical significance.

The intimate setting provided a perfect opportunity for prospective and current JLGNH members to connect, share ideas, and reflect on what community means to us as individuals and as a League.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this inspiring event! We look forward to seeing you at future recruitment and social events as we continue to build connections and strengthen our impact in the Greater New Haven area.

We helped Fill the Dwight Community Fridge for Thanksgiving!

Our November Done in a Day project was to help fill the Dwight Community Fridge just in time for Thanksgiving! This was a wonderful chance to give back and ensure that families in our community have access to essential food items for the holiday.

We invited members, friends, and the public to bring non-perishable goods, fresh produce, and other essentials to help fill the fridge with love and generosity. After stocking the fridge, we celebrated our impact with a well-deserved happy hour at Michelina’s on State Street—a fantastic, woman-owned spot known for its cozy vibes and great drinks.

#JLGNHerstory: Sherese Ward

Since its founding in 1923, the Junior League of Greater New Haven has sought to effect positive change in the Greater New Haven community by promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and supporting the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. As the League prepares for its Centennial Anniversary, we celebrate our members and share their incredible stories, recognizing how each individual story makes up that of the League as a whole.

Sherese Ward

She has a professional background in finance, but has transitioned to a role as Portfolio Director K12 Education Programs with the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation in education philanthropy, for which she draws upon her passion for social justice.

Sherese joined the Junior League of Greater New Haven in 2008 and although she calls herself an over-committer who struggles with work-life balance, she says that JLGNH work felt different from her other passion projects because of the deep friendships she has developed through her Junior League membership with other service-oriented women. Per Sherese, “fitting in my JL responsibilities has never been an issue. My League was comprised of the most wonderful humans, who served as a source of constant energy. My JL work was always energizing.” Ms. Ward served on the committee to plan JLGNH’s signature fundraiser, the annual Winetasting and Auction, and counts that opportunity as one of her happiest memories.

While Sherese has transferred from the JLGNH, she is an integral part of the history of our League and we are proud to count a woman as resilient and curious as Sherese, who believes deeply in the collective power of women, among our lifelong members.

She now lives in New Haven and works with adolescents who have eating disorders. As a military spouse, Kelly appreciates the overall network of AJLI and that her membership in the Junior League of Greater New Haven is transferable. She was happy to be a member of The League when her family moved to New Haven, because she knew she would have a group to join in her new city.

Kelly says her membership in JLGNH is valuable because it helps her, “practice skills that I don’t get to perfect in my job.” She describes her League participation as an exchange. “I give my time and ideas…I get a sense of belonging and purpose, and an opportunity to connect with others.”

Keisha Harp

Keisha joined the Junior League of Greater New Haven during the 2016-2017 League year. Among her many accomplishments, she lists first being a mom and a wife, followed by her extensive educational credentials, including a Master’s in Latin American Studies from Cambridge and a law degree from the University of London. Keisha is a New Haven local, having lived here since her family moved here from Jamaica when she was in the seventh grade. Even still, her decision to join JLGNH was influenced by wanting to perform community service and expand her social network. She’s an active woman, working 3 days a week in New York, so she admits that balancing JLGNH responsibilities with work and other roles involves making a lot of lists and having a lot of family support.

Keisha is a League leader, serving as this year’s JLGNH Assistant Finance Director. The highlight of her time in JLGNH was her involvement with the McConaughy Terrace Reading Program, which included gardening projects, yoga classes, and a Christmas Pop Up Shop. The volunteer experiences were incredibly fulfilling and “the students were so excited about working with us and open to learning new things.”

Of the JLGNH, Keisha says, “I think that the women of the Junior League of [Greater] New Haven are the friendliest and most open of all the women’s organizations that I have joined. There are so many opportunities to learn and develop personally and professionally. You just have to be open to exploring the opportunities that are presented to you.”

She joined the Junior League in New Orleans five years ago, but recently transferred to JLGNH when she moved to New Haven in 2022.

Allison joined the Junior League to give back to her community and meet other women who value voluntarism. In New Orleans, she saw that voluntarism respond quickly to natural disasters near and far every year. After Hurricane Laura, JLNO organized to bring diapers, formula, period products, and other supplies to displaced residents within 24 hours. Allison says, “it made me happy to be part of a caring organization and taught me that Junior Leaguers are all about action.”

She values her League experience for allowing her to assume leadership roles in two fundraisers and learn a new style of communication as the assistant editor of JLNO’s League magazine as well as teaching her more about the organizations doing the daily work of supporting women and girls. One last thing she likes about being a JLGNH member? “The League is a source of near constant positivity and belief that things can change for the better. That is a rare and special resource.”

Ashley Fitton

Ashley Fitton found her way to the Junior League of Greater New Haven naturally. Though she was familiar with the Junior League because her sister-in-law was a member of the New York Junior League, friends she happened to make at New Haven’s YMCA baby swim class as a new mom convinced her to join about five years ago.

Ashley has served in several leadership positions since then, including as the 2021-22 JLGNH President, 2020-2021 President Elect, as the Chair of the League’s Winetasting fundraiser, and honorary Co-Chair of the Done in a Day Committee. She describes her progression within JLGNH’s leadership as beginning with baby steps. “I wanted to feel comfortable taking on a leadership role,” she recalls. But along the way, something clicked for Ashley that changed how she viewed the opportunities available to her. “Once I realized that taking on a leadership role was half of the learning opportunity, I decided to take the plunge.”

She credits the JLGNH with helping her hone her organization skills, especially when handing responsibilities over to new Board members at the end of the League year. She also attributes her ability to balance her League responsibilities with other priorities to, “multitasking, multitasking, multitasking.”

Ashley’s highlights of her time in the League include the memories and friend she made as Winetasting chair, saying, “tough projects really do cement strong relationships!” She also appreciates the ways her League participation has expanded horizons for she and her daughter. One highlight was when she was able to bring her daughter to a League service opportunity, saying, “the opportunity to bring my daughter to the mobile food pantry was enlightening for her.” Personally, Ashley feels that JLGNH, “is very rewarding. Time spent working on League initiatives… stretches your brain in a different capacity than in my home and work lives. I’m appreciative of the opportunities to learn new things and meet new people.”

#JLGNHerstory: Damaris Clark-Spear

By: Allison Gallaspy

Since its founding in 1923, the Junior League of Greater New Haven has sought to effect positive change in the Greater New Haven community by promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and supporting the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. As the League prepares for its Centennial Anniversary, we celebrate our members and share their incredible stories, recognizing how each individual story makes up that of the League as a whole.

Damaris Clark-Spear

Damaris Clark-Spear works in PR when she’s not pursuing her passions of yoga, Pilates, hiking, and being outdoors– preferably at the beach. She joined the Junior League of Greater New Haven in 2018 to meet like-minded women and give back to her community in a more consistent way. She credits her involvement with JLGNH for giving her more opportunities to navigate challenging situations and disagreements to grow personally.

Damaris has previously served in JLGNH leadership positions as the Career Development co-chair and Communications Council Director. She says that these roles have given her more perspective on how to be more creative and flexible, while she hopes her continued involvement will allow her to learn more roles outside her comfort zone.

One of her favorite projects to work on was the Prom Dress Shop because it made her feel happy to be a member of the League. “It was amazing to see what a difference it made to the kids to have that experience and the pressure that it took off the parents to not have to spend that huge amount of money on prom.”

She appreciates the challenges the JLGNH Board has faced since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and say they have been very creative when rising to meet them. But Damaris is probably not surprised by that creative problem solving. To her, being a member of the Junior League means, “open-mindedness and being willing to help others.”

Amy

Amy C. joined the Junior League of Greater New Haven in 2018 and took the leap to leadership this year. Amy is an institutional investor by trade who also enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and quality time with her husband and two dogs. She loves working with numbers, so she was happy to become the League’s Finance Director for the 2021-22 League Year.

She has learned a lot as Finance Director, including what it takes to run a nonprofit like the League, how the League is managed, and gained insight into other executive board positions within the League. Amy says, “what has truly been incredible is the team of other board members who have been so willing to help me out along the way!”

Amy values her experience with JLGNH for connecting her to a community of women who share a common mission, sense of community, and spirit of voluntarism. “We all have different backgrounds,” she says, “but we’re motivated to give back to others.” Her favorite community project shows that sense of community in action -- with New Haven Reads, where after learning about the literacy project, the League collected over 120 books during a drive benefiting the organization. “It was wonderful to be part of the team that put that effort together from start to finish.”

Coming into focus: JLGNH newest focus areas

Dear Reader,

While the 2021-2022 League year continued to pose challenges in creating deep and engaging connections with the community, our members never faltered on their focus of providing support to women and children, specifically around literacy, health and food insecurity.

We accomplished what we set out to do! Our League members donated diapers and we both collected and read books to children in need. We continued to show that we care about children's well-being when we participated in Cardz for Kids, and we showed compassion with our Hearts of Hope.

We addressed women's health issues when we walked to bring awareness and raise funds for cancer and heart disease research, the two leading causes of death for women in the United States (1). In addition, we have acknowledged that the mental health crisis has heightened during the past few years and observed Mental Health Awareness Month in May and offering Mental Health First Aid training to our members to address what mental distress looks like and how to help someone in need.

Throughout the year we’ve continued to make Diversity, Equity & Inclusion a critical part of how we lead. Dr. TLC shared insights on racism and reminded us that we all share in the responsibility to be the change today that we want to see tomorrow. And we continued to honor those that came before us by participating in the MLK virtual series in January, as well as the Women United Celebration in February.

In addition to the work done with our DIAD programming, the League awarded two deserving women with the annual High School Voluntarism Award. All four finalists were exceptional candidates, and we were pleased to recognize two deserving students.

Lastly, we connected our focus areas to the inaugural Little Black Dress Initiative. This campaign raised awareness about poverty and food insecurity in our community via social media and more than $5,000 for League programming through peer-to-peer fundraising efforts. All in all, we had a successful year providing our League members with a mixture of DIADs that aligned with our focus areas and mission, supporting the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Sincerely,

A member of the Junior League since 2015, she has held leadership positions in the Junior League of Charlotte and is currently pulling double duty as the Director of Junior League of Greater New Haven’s Membership Council and Communications Council. She is well on her way to achieving her goal of, “working to always make us a stronger organization of women working toward fulfilling our mission.”

Ms. Beahm points to the JLC Wearhouse in Charlotte as a highlight of her League experience and one where she could directly worked in the community. All her other League placements have been in-league, working to strengthen the League itself. She says, “I also enjoy contradicting the stereotypes many people have about the League. The Junior League as a whole has done so many wonderful things for our communities across the globe, and I am proud to be part of such an important group of women…I hope that all my time and efforts helps us to grow and develop as women leaders in the League and in our community.”

Maeghan transferred to the JLGNH where she was recognized for her contributions to the provisional training program with the 2020-2021’s In-League Award. Ms. Beahm was attracted to membership in the Junior League as an opportunity to develop personal leadership skills while also giving back to her local community. As a stay at home mom who relocates often as a military spouse, Maeghan continues to value the Junior League for the opportunity to keep her career skills in education and nonprofit management sharp serving the League and a reliable instant community in new locales. “Moving to a new area, one thing I knew for certain was that I could transfer my membership with the Junior League and I would have 1) a built-in group of women with whom I could become friends and 2) an immediate opportunity to learn about my new home/community.”

Anna Arons

Anna Arons believes that, “the world can be improved by one tiny step at a time,” and she learned that way of thinking from her grandmother. Anna says of her grandmother, “she doesn’t fret over the seemingly-insurmountable problems facing our society, choosing instead to focus on her community and how she can improve [it]...she makes me want to work in small and large ways to affect change in my own community.” In the spirit of that motivation, Anna joined the Junior League of Washington while she was living in D.C. in 2019.

Anna remains involved in the Junior League because it gives her the chance to meet and make friends with like-minded women. She adds, “it’s a great way to get involved in my community. I like that the League organizes service opportunities and chooses fantastic nonprofits to support.”

Professionally, Anna works in Foundation Relations at Yale University. As a southerner originally, Anna likes to bake, read, travel, cheer on Auburn football, and host events. Part of the reason she likes Junior League is, “the way it combines voluntarism with socialization. Before you even know her, you can count on a Junior League woman to have a certain sense of responsibility to serve her community…and I know a Junior League event will be fun–whether it’s a party or a volunteer opportunity, or a routine meeting.”

#JLGNHerstory: Amber Anthony

Since its founding in 1923, the Junior League of Greater New Haven has sought to effect positive change in the Greater New Haven community by promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and supporting the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. As the League prepares for its Centennial Anniversary, we celebrate our members and share their incredible stories, recognizing how each individual story makes up that of the League as a whole.

Amber Anthony

Amber Anthony enjoys trying new things. She comes from a long line of Texas ranchers located in the Hill Country, but when she moved to Wellesley, Massachusetts she decided to try the Junior League of Boston.

When she transferred to the Junior League of Greater New Haven, she brought with her a myriad of experience in a fascinating range of areas. Amber describes herself as a marathoner, triathlete, small business owner, water polo athlete in the World Games, competitive swimmer, and most importantly, a wife and mother. Her long list of achievements certainly illustrates her motivation to be a lifelong learner and to experience all life has to offer.

Amber found her calling in the Junior League working with the Junior League of Boston’s Kids in the Kitchen community project. She is this year’s Junior League of Greater New Haven League Development Chair and says that meeting the incredible women of JLGNH brings her joy. She keeps her Junior League responsibilities balanced with her job as a Development Manager at the Aurora Women and Girls Foundation by “leav[ing] a lot of sticky notes on my desk reminding me to check my League email!”

Ms. Anthony values the League for the many opportunities it provides for her to grow and give back to the community. She also appreciates the training it provides members as a professional in a nonprofit. Says Amber, “the League offers opportunities to see how nonprofits work in the communities we live…[and to] engage in leadership board training… [that can make] more woman nonprofit board members.”

Amber hopes her League Legacy will be, “that I showed up and gave my all.” We JLGNHers don’t see how anyone could possibly think otherwise of Ms. Anthony.

We’ll let Ashley Ahearn introduce herself. She says, “I’m a kombucha-drinking, mountain peak explorer, needlepoint loving, crazy cat & dog person who loves to travel the world.” Ashley is active, working

movement into the beginning, middle, and end of her typical day. She also moves often around the country, helping franchise owners develop their sales staff in her career.

She’s inspired by the people she works with at her job, motivated by her family and her goals, and also by contributing to the League’s success. She, “want[s] more than anything for our League to succeed in every venture we do and that keeps me motivated to stay on track.”

Ashley joined the Junior League of Greater New Haven in 2018 because she, “wanted to to align [her]self with an organization that truly makes a difference to the population we serve.”

She also values the League’s leadership learning and community impact. But there was one more thing that attracted Ashley to become a League member, “let’s be honest! I wanted to make some life-long friendships!”

Little Black Dress Initiative

Five days, One dress

By: Naomie Baptiste and Caitlin Gallagher

On a single night, more than half a million Americans go homeless, which represents 0.2% of the US population.(1) According to the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project (https://yhhap.org/), the same number of Connecticut residents alone rely on SNAP assistance. The Junior League of Greater New Haven sought to address this problem with the implementation of the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) during the week of April 18-22, 2022. Founded in 2014 by the Junior League of London, the Little Black Dress Initiative is a week-long awareness and fundraising campaign that harnesses the power of social media to illustrate the restrictions poverty places on choices, opportunities, and access to resources. Advocates wear one black dress (or outfit) for five consecutive days, in an effort to spark conversations and awareness about poverty and related issues, including food insecurity.

Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to affordable, nutritious food, and impacts 13.9% of Connecticut residents; but in New Haven, the rate is 22%--twice the national average. Compassionate Greater New Haven members took action by wearing their little black dresses; posting on social media platforms; and contacting their networks to raise funds using data, imagery, and even signs reading "all children deserve access to 3 healthy meals everyday." The initiative gained attention of the local community and compelled the hearts of supporters, resulting in success for its inaugural year in New Haven. During the first Junior League of Greater New Haven Little Black Dress Initiative, the chapter raised an impressive $3,500 during the week of LBDI, reaching the set goal of $5,000 by the end of month. The Little Black Dress Initiative was spearheaded by the Finance Committee.

Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging

Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging

The founder of The Junior League, Mary Harriman, believed that we all bear the responsibility to learn about the world around us in order to be more effective in our desire to improve it. That we should really try to understand the “why” behind something, not just superficially give it lip service.

As we strive within our organization to live up to our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging, we honor and celebrate the struggles, the history and the leaders of our multifaceted world.

The Junior League of Greater New Haven is part of a larger network of more than 125,000 women in over 295 Leagues in four countries. While each League is unique, we all share common mission, vision, and goals. This includes our commitment to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations and communities.

Understanding the importance of this topic in our local community, the Junior League of Greater New Haven continues to utilize our capacity as a training organization to educate our members through topical book discussions, presentations from experts in the field, and purposefully interweaving diversity and inclusion in all we do.

In addition, our League has pledged to ensuring our recruitment practices; Done in a Day volunteer opportunities for members; and League communications, both internal and external, embody our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

AJLI's Statement on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

The Association of Junior Leagues International condemns discrimination, racism, and racial injustice in our communities and in our Junior Leagues. Black women and other women of color have been systemically denied equity and inclusion in our economy, education, civic privileges, and responsibilities in the voluntary sector, including in The Junior League. As affirmed by our member Junior Leagues, we are accelerating our efforts to take action and advance definitive, measurable policies and practices that eliminate racism in our countries, our communities, and our Junior Leagues. When we do this, we unlock tremendous power for our communities and realize our vision of women around the world as catalysts for lasting change.

Tell us a little about yourself: I am relatively new to the New Haven area, I moved here in December 2019 for a fundraising job at Yale. I now live in Westville with my fiance. The past decade, I was in State College, PA and earned both my bachelor's and master's degree at Penn State. I love reading, traveling, and watching Penn State football.

Meet JLGNH Fall Provisional, Amanda Lorenz

Name: Amanda Lorenz

Tell us a little about yourself: I moved to CT just a little under a year ago from Memphis, TN, and I’ve loved being back on the East Coast! I’m a nurse with a primary background in pediatric oncology, but just started teaching nursing students this past spring. With so much recent change, it’s been nice to join the JLGNH and feel like I’m finally finding my own little community here in CT!

What inspired you to join the Junior League of Greater New Haven? Being new to the area and moving during the pandemic made it kind of difficult to meet people and find opportunities to get plugged in. I’ve always loved volunteering, so when I saw that the New Haven area had a Junior League, I knew I wanted to get involved!

What are you looking forward to most about being a Junior League member? I’m really looking forward to getting to know the New Haven area on a different level than I’d be able to without the JLGNH. I think it will be great to learn the different needs within the community itself, and then have the opportunity to actually help out and make a difference.

What advice would you give someone thinking about joining the Junior League? If someone I knew was thinking about joining the Junior League, I would say go for it! I truly have nothing but positive things to say about my experience so far - the women I’ve met have been so kind and made me feel so welcome. If there’s anyone looking for opportunities to learn and grow in volunteerism or leadership, I think that the Junior League would be a great fit!

In what city do you live? New Haven

Tell us a little about yourself: My husband and I moved to New Haven, CT for his residency just this past summer after living in Kentucky our whole lives. Lately, I have been really enjoying exploring everything New Haven has to offer, especially the beaches and pizza. I love being outdoors, listening to podcasts, playing board/card games, traveling with my husband, and running.

What inspired you to join the Junior League of Greater New Haven? I was inspired to join the JLGNH because I came from a community of close, strong, philanthropic, and inspiring women in Kentucky. I was excited to find the same in Connecticut.

What are you looking forward to most about being a Junior League member? I am looking forward to learning more about how I can serve my new community while building community.

What is something you want your fellow JLGNH members to know about you? A fun fact about me is I love helping others organize their homes!

Meet JLGNH Fall Provisional, Caitlin Gallagher

Name: Caitlin Gallagher

Tell us a little about yourself: As a Swamp Yankee from small-town Connecticut, I think it was my spell as a Brownie and Girl Scout that first kindled in me a civic spirit, although this admittedly fell by the wayside while pursuing a degree in English at Smith College and, later, an MA in Victorian Literature at the University of London. Ever the Anglophile, I'm now grateful that my work as a publicist at Yale University Press has me trumpeting biographies of the Bloomsbury Group and retrospectives of Regency dress, and hope to bring my bookish background to bear on various projects for the Junior League of Greater New Haven.

What inspired you to join the Junior League of Greater New Haven? It was shortly after moving to New Haven that the pandemic struck and I began working remotely. Not until being confined to my apartment, though, did I realize just how little I'd explored--let alone contributed--to my new community, and so went about researching volunteer opportunities in New Haven. While many seemed promising, I was immediately drawn to the Junior League's storied legacy and its commitment to actively training women to be effective volunteers. Seeking to make a genuine difference and to serve in the company of like-minded women, I joined the Junior League.

What are you looking forward to most about being a Junior League member? As hackneyed as it may sound, I'm most looking forward to meeting, getting to know, and learning from my fellow members in hopes of gaining greater insight into the League and becoming a successful member myself.

What advice would you give someone thinking about joining the Junior League? Don't hesitate to get involved! Too often I'm in the habit of procrastinating or putting off worthy ventures for fear that I've nothing to bring to the table. While I've only been a member since this summer, I can say that such fear is unfounded as I've already found a wellspring of warmth and support in my fellow Provisionals.

What is something you want your fellow JLGNH members to know about you? Before taking the liberal arts path at college, I was an aspiring operatic soprano with an offer to study at the Hartt School in Hartford, although I've long since said goodbye to any dreams of La Scala.

In what city do you live? New Haven, CT, where I've yet to take a side in the city's pizza wars.

Where is your hometown? Old Saybrook, CT, where I once saw Katharine Hepburn at the post office and reflexively curtsied as if meeting the Queen!

Also, wanted to develop a consistent network within the community to engage in community service together, advance leadership skills, and develop connections.

What are you looking forward to most about being a Junior League member? Developing connections with similar like minded women in the local community.

What advice would you give someone thinking about joining the Junior League? Great opportunities to connect, help, engage, and develop.

What is something you want your fellow JLGNH members to know about you? Very straight forward, honest, transparent, personality. I’m easy going, love to continually devote time for personal and professional growth. Try to surround myself with people who are similar.

Tell us a little about yourself: I'm a civil engineer specializing in bridge design. I love working on home improvement DIY projects and watch way too much This Old House.

What inspired you to join the Junior League of Greater New Haven? I was a member in OKC and St Louis. I loved the OKC league and wanted to rejoin.

What are you looking forward to most about being a Junior League member? I'm new to CT and currently work 100% from home, so I'm looking forward to getting out of the house and making friends.

What advice would you give someone thinking about joining the Junior League? Give it a shot! The best way to see if you like the Junior League is by joining.

What is something you want your fellow JLGNH members to know about you? If you want a friend to try a new restaurant, go for a hike, or peruse an antique store, I'm your girl.

In what city do you live? Hamden, CT

Where is your hometown? Plano, TX

Q: How many years have you been involved with the Junior League?

A: I joined the Junior League in the Spring of 2018

Q: From which League are you transferring?

A: Transferring from The Junior League of Northern Westchester

Q: What brought you to the Greater New Haven area?

A: We purchased a house in Southbury, CT, in May, having never been to the area before house hunting.

Q: What's the best restaurant you've tried since moving here?

A: Probably Mercato's Italian Kitchen and Bar in Southbury. I don't get out to eat much these days.

Q: What is something you're excited to do in Connecticut this fall?

A: We found a local farm just down the road that is owned by this little old lady and she sold us our pumpkins this year, we went back for apple picking, and they do cut-your-own Christmas trees, which we've never done before.

Q: Are there any fun traditions from your former League that you would like to get started in the Junior League of Greater New Haven?

A: Not that come to mind. They hosted a lot of sponsored dinners, where a portion of the nights proceeds went to the Chapter, and the social events were really great to get out and see people.

A: Our League has done and can do so much good in our community, and I wanted to step up to help us fulfill our mission. And it's a great learning experience as well!

Q: How many years have you been involved with Junior League?

A: I was a provisional in fall 2018.

A: I think a lot of women join the Junior League because it not only provides a chance to form friendships with great women, but it also provides the opportunity to build those bonds while doing good in our local community.

Meet Maeghan Beahm, 2021-22 JLGNH Communications and Membership Director

Learn more about Maeghan Beahm, the 2021-22 Junior League of Greater New Haven Communications and Membership Director.

Maeghan is the current Membership Council Director and Communications Council Director. She transferred to the Junior League of Greater New Haven in 2018 from the Junior League of Charlotte, where she joined the League in 2015. Maeghan joined the Junior League to better connect with the community in which she lives, and meet like-minded women looking to do the same. During the 2020-21 League year, Maeghan was awarded the "In-League Award" for her work on the Provisional Training program. Maeghan has worked on various internal placements, working to help support the day-to-day operations of the League. She is currently responsible for recruitment and retention of League members, as well as all internal and external communications for the JLGNH.

Maeghan holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Winthrop University and a Master of Arts in Nonprofit Management with a concentration in Marketing from The University of Georgia. She has taught grades three through six; and worked for various nonprofits including Autism Speaks and the American Cancer Society. She currently lives in Groton with her husband, young son, and their beloved dogs.
Q: What inspired you to volunteer to serve in a leadership role for JLGNH?

A: I joined the League wanting to develop my leadership skills, but I was truly inspired to serve in a leadership role within the League after seeing the strong women who led the League during my provisional year. They had careers, and families, and yet their passion for the Junior League and their community was so apparent and so strong that I knew I wanted to serve in a similar capacity.

Q: How many years have you been involved with Junior League?

A: I joined the Junior League of Charlotte in 2015, and transferred to the Junior League of New Haven in 2019, after my husband's career with The Navy brought us to Connecticut.

Q: Many members are interested in a literacy focus for our League. Can you tell us about a book you read recently and loved?

A: I used to be an avid reader, but have not had as much free time to read now that my son is almost 18 months old and always on the go. So these days I listen to a lot of audiobooks while I'm in the car, and recently listened to and loved The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure. It's about an architect living in Nazi-occupied Paris who creates secret hiding places for Jews trying to escape France.

Q: In the 21st century, there are so many ways for women to connect--what do you think is unique about Junior League and the women it brings together?

A: One of the things that drew me to the Junior League, and something I think that makes it unique, are the training and leadership opportunities offered to all members. When I joined the League, I wanted to create a better connection with the community in which I lived, but I was also craving the opportunity to develop and grow my leadership skills. By my second active year, I was serving in a nominated position; by my third year, I was a member of the Management Team; and now I serve on the Board of Directors. No other organization would have allowed me to serve in leadership capacities so quickly, and provided the training to be successful in those roles.

Q: What holiday tradition are you most excited about celebrating this season?

A: It's not a tradition, per se, but I am most excited about celebrating Christmas with my family (fingers crossed). With COVID-19 last year, we were unable to travel and see family for my son's first Christmas, so I am hopeful that we are able to travel to South Carolina and spend Christmas morning with them.

Meet Ashley Fitton, 2021-22 JLGNH President

Learn more about Ashley Fitton, the 2021-22 Junior League of Greater New Haven President.

Ashley is the current President and has been a member of the Junior League of Greater New Haven since 2017. She most recently served on the JLGNH board as President-Elect, and previously served as the Chair of the fundraising event Winetasting (Finance) and interim Done-In-A-Day Committee Co-Chair. She is a recipient of the Community Award presented by the Junior League of Greater New Haven, due to her significant contribution to her community in a previous league year (via her Community/Done-In-A-Day work). This year, with the League and board’s help, she’ll be primarily focused on fostering and developing volunteerism and training opportunities for the league, with an eye towards diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Ashley holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Vermont, with a focus on Business Administration. She currently works in Human Resources for a CT-based insurance company. Ashley resides in Essex with her husband and daughter.
Q: What inspired you to volunteer to serve in a leadership role for JLGNH?

A: In my time at JLGNH, I have seen some very inspiring women come before me in leadership roles. I’ve watched them balance families, jobs, hardships, etc, all while volunteering in their leadership roles with JLGNH.

In my mind, Serving on the board initially seemed like it should be left to the seasoned veterans of our organization, but I quickly learned in my third year of the league (while helping as an honorary co-chair of Community/DIAD) that almost anyone could take on a leadership role as a growth opportunity. Given our smaller league size, It’s not uncommon for members to take on different leadership roles throughout their League journey, and last year was my time to take on an expanded leadership role (President Elect) which led me to my role as President today. It’s been a great learning experience so far!

Q: How many years have you been involved with Junior League?

A: This is my 5th year!

Q: Many members are interested in a literacy focus for our League. Can you tell us about a book you read recently and loved?

A: I’m not as avid of a reader (of adult books) as I’d like, or should be, but did read The Giver of Stars, by Jojo Moyes, and sped right through it.

Our family reads a ton with my 1st grader who is an emerging reader. I started reading books to her as an infant and we have some classics that we still enjoy and reread today (including any Sandra Boynton books).

Q: In the 21st century, there are so many ways for women to connect--what do you think is unique about Junior League and the women it brings together?

A: An organization that is local AND nationwide. We see lots of transfers (in and out) of JLGNH, and it shows the strength of a nationwide organization that allows, and promotes, movement when members move. Often, women are looking to make community connections outside of their family and work circles, so having the League (wherever their location) to help facilitate those volunteer and social connections is ideal.

Q: What holiday tradition are you most excited about celebrating this season?

A: My daughter was born on Thanksgiving (and wow was it a memorable entrance!) so it’s a holiday that my family cherishes. Our family is local and small, so get togethers often occur throughout the year for birthdays and whatnot, but given the health challenges a few in my family members have faced this year, make coming together for thanksgiving even more important and memorable. If I’ve learned nothing over this past year+ (other than how to navigate zoom/Google meet/etc) Getting together to celebrate family and good health is something I won’t take for granted!

DIAD - Fisher House Decorating

On October 10th, JLGNH members gathered for a Done-In-A-Day event at the Fisher House located in West Haven on the VA Hospital Campus to decorate the home for Halloween.

The West Haven Fisher House opened in May 2018 and operates to provide a comfortable home where military & veterans' families can stay free of charge while a loved one is in the hospital, along with operating the Hero Miles program, Hotels for Heroes program, and managing a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses, and children of fallen and disabled veterans.

Members worked to get the house fun and spooky just in time for Halloween, to keep the Fisher House feeling more like home for guests. Following the DIAD Activity, the October GMM was held in the Fisher House's Dining Room. Thank you to everyone who participated, and for the Fisher House of West Haven for sharing their beautiful home with us!
