Kids in the Kitchen

Since inception in 2006, the Junior League of Greater New Haven has participated in the Association of Junior Leagues International Kids in the Kitchen initiative, a program designed to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and to help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.kitk2009group

Joining over 200 sister Leagues each year, the Junior League of Greater New Haven has provided lessons and demonstrations related to preparation of healthy meals and snacks in partnership with local community organizations, chefs and nutritionists. Here's what we've done in recent years:

  • 2009 : With volunteers from the Yale University Sustainable Farm and the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, hosted a "Day at the Farm" for local area high school students where participants learned gardening techniques, made their own brick oven pizzas, and had a discussion about making healthy lifestyle choices.
  • 2008 : Hosted a healthy living workshop for the parents and students at Timothy Dwight Elementary School.
  • kitk09pizza 2007 : Partnered with the Girl Scouts of Connecticut to organize a "Day at the Mall" with activity booths that included a Jazzercise class, a food pyramid game, and recipe making contests.
  • 2006 : Hosted a "Healthy Living Day" with the Girl Scouts of Connecticut featuring a hip hop dance class, a cooking demonstration by a local chef in an industrial kitchen, healthy recipe taste testing, a class on herb gardening, and a recipe book making contest.
